Lutheran World Service India (LWSI) was initiated as a Country Program of Lutheran World Federation/Department for World Service (LWF/DWS) Geneva in 1974 to extend relief support to the refugees of the Bangladesh War of Independence in 1971 in collaboration with the Swedish Mission, as the Cooch Behar Refugee Service.

On September 4, 2008 the organization was registered as Lutheran World Service India Trust (LWSIT). Today, we respond to the causes and consequences of human suffering and poverty through justice and dignity for all by empowering the last, the least and the lost.
